The inspiration behind our newest greyhounds

Intelligent, gentle, majestic. Just a few words to describe the beautiful greyhound dog. I see so many on my evening walk, each so graceful as they walk the neighbourhood streets.

Inspired to share what I saw in this beautiful breed I put a call out to my wonderful audience. I wanted to find two greyhound dogs that would join our character range and share their stories.

From the submissions received we were introduced to Shirley and Lil, it was love at first sight.

Both Shirley and Lil were adopted as most greyhounds are. They are both in loving, caring homes and now living their best lives.

Meet Shirley the Greyhound

Shirley is a great example of personal growth. In a previous life she faced daily pressure to succeed and perform which didn’t do any favours for her health. She finds it difficult to reflect on those times but she often glistens with gratitude when she thinks about how far she has come.

Q and A with Shirley the Greyhound

I sat down with Shirley the greyhound to get to know her a little more.
She shared what get's her up in the morning and what her ideal weekend looks like. Enjoy her candid responses below!

What would it be, an ear massage or back massage?

This is almost an impossible question to answer but I do love a full back massage. Still waiting for my humans to offer a hot stone option though.

Running at the park or strutting the sidewalks

Although some of my greyhound friends love to run (not race) I much prefer slow strolls around my neighbourhood to check my p-mails. As Jerry Seinfeld said: “I choose not to run.”

Winter with a coat or summer with the paws out

Another tough one. I do look fabulous in my vast collection of T-shirts, coats and pyjamas but I prefer going al naturale.

Dog park with your mates or quiet night in on the couch with your hooman?

If I never saw another dog ever again I wouldn’t even notice. Sorry friends but a night in on the couch with the humans is my bliss.

If you're headed to the fridge, what's your snack of choice?

Roast chicken if it’s available. Also cheese or cooked eggs. And my guilty pleasure is Nutri-Grain.

What get's you up in the morning?

My bladder.

What does an ideal weekend look like for you?

Warm snuggles in the hooman bed, walkies around the neighbourhood, hot brekky, followed by a short 12-hour nap.

Where do you see yourself in 2 years?

I’m writing this from the couch and probably won’t even leave here within the next two years. Hopefully in two years I’ll be living in a world with no greyhound racing.

What would you tell a hooman that is looking to adopt a greyhound like you?

I strongly encourage kind people to foster or adopt a rescued greyhound like myself. The racing industry is breeding and discarding us quicker than we can be saved. Some of us need a little more patience and understanding than others but we are worth it. We will love you forever and be so grateful for your love and care. Please chat with your local independent rescue group.

Meet Lil the Greyhound

Lil is finally in a happy place where she can take it all in with a deep breath and take comfort in what her life has become. Getting to this realisation has been a journey for Lil because she was caught up in the hustle and bustle of a previous life.

Q and A with Lil the Greyhound

I sat down with Lil the greyhound to get to know her a little more.
She shared her guilty pleasures and her massage of choice. Enjoy her entertaining responses below!

What would it be, an ear massage or back massage?

An ear massage will always stop me in my tracks! I can stand as long as I have too!

Running at the park or strutting the sidewalks?

Strutting the sidewalks is my jam! My hoomans are very patient with me while I sniff every single tree, letterbox, fence, bush and dog friends. Hooman mum says I’m not allowed to run around the dog park because us hounds aren’t really allowed off our leads, but I sure would love to one day!

Winter with a coat or summer with the paws out?

Did someone say summer?!? Nothing beats long summer days in my clam-shell pool and a nice cold doggy bone!

Dog park with your mates or quiet night in on the couch with your hooman?

Please don’t make me choose!! I love catch ups with my canine girls but give me a movie night complete with popcorn and ice cream any time! I’ll lick up the drips and eat the popcorn off the floor! Mmmm mmm.

If you're headed to the fridge, what's your snack of choice?

Snack of choice would have to be the doggie smoothie that mum makes. She says it helps me run faster(but I don’t care for that anymore)
Sometimes, my hooman brother's & sis will sneak me some sweet potato chips! Oh how I love those delicious orange stick things!

What get's you up in the morning?

The sound of my hooman opening the draw that my lead is in. I can hear it a mile away! Then I spend 5 minutes jumping up and down because walkies are my favourite favourite favourite thing in the whoooooole world!

What does an ideal weekend look like for you?

Walkies and walkies and zoomies. Then a long nap. Then a wrestle with my bro, dolls with my sis, a belly rub from my big bro and a cuddle with my little bro. Most likely another nap. Then another walk & a yummy treat! That’s my typical weekend. Mum says the best girls need the best weekends!

Where do you see yourself in 2 years?

I see myself living my best life, taking more road trips & long walks but hopefully along the beach more often. I would really love to one day be allowed to run free at the park where my mates play! Oh, and I’ve asked mum for a canine sister but she says she has enough mouths to feed for now.

What would you tell a hooman that is looking to adopt a greyhound like you?

I would tell them to not wait another second! Us greyhound’s are the sweetest most lovable friends you could ever have! We don’t cause any trouble, we aren’t very loud, we don’t ask for much except to be given a chance, loved, spoiled and fed! And zoomies, of course!

Greyhound FAQ's

Greyhound Rescue have a wonderful FAQ page on their site. Here are a couple of interesting ones I wanted to share.

Do greyhounds really need pyjamas?

Greyhounds have very little body fat and only a single coat, so they certainly feel the cold. During cooler weather you can expect to provide a coat/pyjamas for your greyhound overnight, and in particularly cold weather, during the day too. Each hound is different, but as a general guide if you are wearing a jumper you should consider putting your hound in one too.

How much exercise will my greyhound need?

Greyhounds require comparatively little exercise, which surprises a lot of people! The majority of greyhounds will be happy with two brisk walks a day of around 20 minutes each. Some hounds will be more active than that, which is something that we take into consideration when matching a hound to your lifestyle.
