Our Marvin the Meerkat Pillowcase fundraising for the Good Friday Appeal.
In 2020, my beautiful nephew was born with a large ventricular septal defect and experienced heart failure in his first few months. He needed surgery to survive which was not what we expected for him at such a young age.
What helped was knowing he would receive specialist care at the world class Royal Children's Hospital. Having such a reputable hospital with an exceptional standard of care nearby offered a sense of comfort in what was a very difficult time for his family.

During his many visits to the hospital pre surgery, he was able to watch the Meerkats in the Meerkat enclosure built within the RCH and maintained by the Melbourne Zoo.
The delightful meerkats offered a welcomed distraction and a spark of joy to all of the children and carers who stopped by.
It was after learning about the enclosure and the positive impact the meerkats have on patients, families and carers, that I was inspired to paint. I wanted to create a character that captured the essence of what the Meerkats brought to the children. Marvin the Meerkat was born.

Before I put paintbrush to paper, I spend a lot of time dreaming up who this character will be. I guess you can say I create my characters from the inside out. Working on their unique personality and traits is important before starting the artwork as it determines so much about what the final character will look like.
From the minute I decided to create Marvin, I had a strong sense of who he would be. He was kind and compassionate, hopeful and comforting.
It was my hope that when people saw Marvin they would feel at ease in his company. They would feel seen and listened too.

The Good Friday Appeal raises funds to enable The Royal Children’s Hospital to provide world class care to children.
This year we are an official fundraiser for the Good Friday Appeal.
$10 from every Marvin the Meerkat Pillowcase sold will be donated directly to the Good Friday Appeal.
With Marvin's help, I am able to thank the RCH for the level of care, compassion and hope they offered our family and families around the world.
I hope our Marvin the Meerkat pillowcases can offer a sense of comfort and spark some joy to those that need it most.
